How this one actually started

Not with “what is a chat client.” That fight was already over in the earlier Bubble Chat notes.

This pass started after the desk was already real in my head: main thread in the middle, floating chats for side questions, maybe five or ten of them open. The new itch was blunt.

I cannot read the room.

Which bubble is research? Which one is coding? Where did the Electron thread go? Can I park three of them without losing them? Can yesterday’s layout come back as thinking archaeology, not as a blank canvas with a file list?

So this piece is a feature add-on pass for the floating workspace: glanceability, gestures, session lifecycle, anti-clutter memory, and one adult build rule at the end. Companion energy. Assume Conversation Mode and Workspace Mode already exist. What makes multi-bubble work feel like a desk you can trust?


1. Glance first: role icons

This is something I have not seen done well elsewhere.

Every floating chat gets a tiny icon.

Not because the model needs a costume.

Because you can glance at the workspace and immediately know what each bubble is doing.

Ten unlabeled panels is a scavenger hunt. Ten role-marked panels is a room you can scan.


2. Find and frame: minimap and docking

Minimap

Imagine ten floating chats.

Instead of hunting for them, a tiny overview:

Click one. Camera smoothly flies to it.

Same family as Figma or Miro, not the same family as a messaging app sidebar.

Docking

Sometimes free float is freedom. Sometimes you want comparison.

Drag a floating chat. It snaps.

Docking is not a replacement for float. It is the mode for side-by-side judgment.


3. Canvas physics: Free Mode and Auto Arrange

Design question that should not collapse into a fake binary:

Should floating chats overlap freely like desktop windows, and gently repel each other so they stay readable?

Support both:

  • Free Mode for maximum flexibility.
  • Auto Arrange when you want a clean workspace.

Same product. Two intents. Do not force one physics model on every mood.


4. Session Summary on close

This one is huge.

When you close the session, you should not just lose the day into “history.”

Close becomes a ritual with an artifact, not a power button.


5. Pin-to-Main (the addictive promote)

You are halfway through a floating chat.

Suddenly: “This answer actually belongs in the main discussion.”

Instead of copy-paste, press 📌.

It inserts into the main thread as:

with a backlink.

Beautiful, because provenance travels with the answer. Main stays the spine. Float stays the workshop. Promotion is a first-class act, not a paste accident.


6. Background Agent

Floating Chat #4 is researching Electron.

Instead of waiting, you minimize it. Tiny spinner. You keep talking in the main chat.

Ten minutes later:

Click. Answer appears.

Almost like having interns working beside you. Parallel work is the point of a multi-bubble desk. Waiting serially is the old client habit sneaking back in.


7. Search the session, not one thread

Not search inside one chat. Search the entire session.

Type Electron. Instantly:

No scrolling archaeology by hand.

Sometimes you do not want messages. You want the bubble.

8. Gestures that teach the product

Throw Bubble

Suppose you are talking and you suddenly think: “Explain Electron.”

Instead of hunting New Chat, you literally drag outward.

Like stretching chewing gum. The bubble tears off. Now it floats.

That gesture alone teaches users the concept. No tutorial needed. Spawn is a motion, not a menu.

Bubble Parking

Sometimes the desk looks like:

Too much. Flick one upward. It minimizes into a dock, like macOS window minimize.

You do not lose it. You reclaim surface.

Shared Clipboard drag

Suppose S3 gives an amazing answer. Should you be able to drag that answer directly into S1?

Not copy-paste. Literally drag the AI response as a card into another conversation.

This could become one of the most delightful interactions in the app: cross-bubble knowledge move with the same hand language as Throw and Pin.


9. Preview, pin, and remember position

One bubble can stay always visible.

Reference bubble always stays on the side. Perfect for documentation while the main thread moves.

Bubble Memory

Every bubble remembers:

  • scroll position
  • collapsed answers
  • cursor position
  • zoom

Exactly as you left it. Feels like multiple browser tabs that never forget.

Session persistence

When you reopen yesterday’s session, every floating chat should reopen exactly where it was: positions, zoom level, collapsed state, viewport.

Strong vote: yes.

If the workspace is a thinking desk, reopening it should feel like walking back into your office and finding every paper where you left it. Spatial memory is half the product.


10. Workspace Replay (possible signature)

Suppose yesterday you had:

The bubbles animate back exactly where they were.

You literally watch yesterday’s thinking appear.

That is not “open recent files.” That is resume archaeology. For people who think spatially, the layout is part of the memory. Replay might be the signature feature of the whole series.

Session map sidebar + thread labels

Also needed once you have 5 to 10 branches open: a mini session map or sidebar listing all bubbles at a glance.

Plus a tiny thread label at the top of each panel (main, side note, research, definition check) so the screen stays readable even when panels stack.


11. Snapshots, color, and time

Bubble Snapshot

One click: 📷 Snapshot.

Creates a frozen copy when an AI answer is really good and you do not want later edits to overwrite that moment.

Conversation Color

Every floating chat gets its own color automatically.

Export can preserve those colors. You will subconsciously remember: “The orange one was about Cursor.”

Color is a landmark system, not decoration.

Bubble Timer

Each bubble quietly tracks time:

Later a Historian-style worker can say: “Most of today’s exploration went into Google Cloud.”

Time becomes narrative fuel, not only analytics vanity.


12. Anti-clutter memory design

Ask. Read. Close. Gone forever. No saving.

Sometimes you do not want knowledge. You just want curiosity satisfied. Guilt-free discard is a product feature, not a failure of discipline.

Bubble Importance

Each bubble can be:

  • ⭐ Important
  • 📝 Normal
  • 🗑 Disposable

During export, only Important ones become part of permanent memory.

That reduces clutter dramatically. Not everything that floated deserves immortality.

Bubble Relationships (optional, post-hoc)

Do not force a graph while thinking.

But sometimes after the session ends you realize Electron actually relates to WebUI. Allow dragging one bubble onto another. That is enough.

No complicated graph editing mid-flow. Relationships as after-the-fact light structure, if at all.


13. Architecture: spend months on experience, not plumbing

This is where months of life get saved or wasted.

Do not build the client from scratch.

Start from an existing open-source chat UI and modify it. Two serious candidates:

  • Hugging Face Chat UI: already supports OpenAI-compatible APIs such as OpenRouter, designed to be self-hosted.
  • OpenMLC: already supports OpenRouter, OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Ollama, profiles, local storage, and self-hosting.

I would rather spend six months building the experience (throw, pin, park, replay, importance, minimap) than rebuilding authentication, markdown rendering, model switching, streaming responses, and settings.

The distinctive product is the spatial thinking desk. Chat plumbing is substrate. Treat it that way.


What this add-on pass is really arguing

If the earlier Bubble Chat pieces said “conversations can float,” this one says:

  1. Glanceability (icons, colors, labels, minimap) makes multi-bubble work human-readable.
  2. Gestures (throw, park, pin, drag-answer) teach the model of the product without a manual.
  3. Lifecycle (summary, persistence, preview, replay, memory) makes the desk trustworthy across days.
  4. Anti-clutter (scratch, importance tiers, optional post-hoc links) keeps permanent memory honest.
  5. Build strategy (fork Chat UI / OpenMLC) puts months into the experience that competitors will not casually copy.

Companion note energy: feature invention and UX hypotheses, provisional and interaction-led. Ship the desk people can scan, park, promote, and re-enter, then let the open-source client do the boring job of being a chat client.
