1. Prompt spine (human, ordered)
Source is a compact research digest, not a multi-turn chat. The human spine is the collection order: what got asked for and stacked.
-
P1 - Name the Hermes faces that are not Open Web UI. Hermes Client as CLI-mirroring web wrapper (spending limits, multi-agent profiles). Hermes WebUI (nesquena) as the “cleaner, less bloated” alternative. Explicit contrast: general chat UI vs agent-need UI.
-
P2 - Surfaces beyond chat. Budibase for forms, approvals, DB apps where Hermes is the logic layer. Conduit as native mobile (WebSocket streaming, voice). Hermes WebUI restated as lightweight dark browser parity with CLI and no heavy build step.
-
P3 - Context and agent-native tools. Obsidian vault as live agent context via notes and backlinks. Firecrawl for clean structured search data instead of raw HTML (token cost). Skill packs / plugins (Debug Doctor, coding workflows, desktop automation). Native integrations: Google Workspace, Slack, Discord, Stripe, Todoist.
-
P4 - Access layer + capability frontier. Tailscale as the practical remote path when Hermes is local. Enhancements to watch: Daytona/Modal persistent environments that hibernate, MEMORY.md / USER.md growing memory, subagents for parallel workstreams at low context cost.
2. Start state
Already living with Hermes as the agent brain (CLI, Telegram, WebUI). The itch is not “is there a chat box.” The itch is which surfaces actually respect agent work instead of dressing a multi-agent system as a generic LLM front-end.
Conflict underneath:
- Open Web UI is the default recommendation in the wild; the body keeps saying it feels like the wrong product shape.
- Want a map of real alternatives (Client, nesquena WebUI, mobile, tools apps) with concrete claims, not branding.
- Secondary hunger: remote access, cost, memory, and parallel agents. UI choice is only the door.
Posture: comparative, operator-minded, collecting names that map to a stack already running on local/VPS lines.
3. Transitions (with impulses)
P1 → P2 (after the two Hermes UIs are named)
- Frame lock: CLI parity and agent-need focus are the selection criteria. “Cleaner” is not aesthetics alone; it is less chat-product bloat.
- Content yank: Budibase shows the next step after chat: Hermes as logic behind forms and approvals, not another conversation pane.
- Mobile itch: if Hermes is the mobile/Telegram assistant layer, Conduit (and WebSocket/voice) becomes part of the UI map, not a side note.
P2 → P3 (after surfaces expand)
- Context hunger: chat without vault is thin; Obsidian as live context is the atypical integration worth keeping.
- Cost awareness mid-stack: Firecrawl lands as token hygiene, not search hype.
- Ecosystem impulse: skill packs and Workspace/Slack/Discord/Stripe/Todoist turn Hermes from “a UI problem” into “a surface + plugin problem.”
P3 → P4 (after integrations list)
- Access reality: local Hermes is useless off-network without Tailscale (or equivalent). Remote is a product requirement.
- Director mode on the frontier: stop collecting UIs; watch memory files, hibernate environments, and subagents as the differentiators that outlast any single front-end.
- End hunt: a publishable landscape that separates face (UI), brain (Hermes), context (Obsidian), access (Tailscale), and cost/memory architecture.
4. Inner state arc
| Stage | State | What was hunted |
|---|---|---|
| Start | Skeptical of Open Web UI default | Faces built for agents, not generic chat |
| Mid | Surfaces expand past browser chat | Budibase apps, Conduit, vault context |
| Peak | Stack becomes ecosystem | Firecrawl, skills, third-party integrations, Tailscale |
| End | Capability frontier over UI fashion | Hibernate env, MEMORY.md / USER.md, subagents |
Arc in one line: reject chat-default → map agent surfaces → wire context and access → pin the cost/memory/subagent frontier.
5. Speech habits visible in this source only
- Bullet research digest, product names first, one-line claim per surface.
- Contrast language: “Unlike Open Web UI,” “cleaner,” “less bloated,” “focusing specifically on the agent’s needs.”
- Operator features called out: spending limits, multi-agent profiles, CLI parity, no complex build step.
- Logic-layer framing for Budibase: Hermes handles logic behind forms/approvals/DB apps, not “chat inside a no-code tool.”
- Token and cost sensitivity: Firecrawl structured data vs raw HTML; Daytona/Modal hibernate for VPS cost.
- Memory as files: MEMORY.md and USER.md that grow from observed preferences (libraries, habits).
- Subagents as collapse: parallel workstreams into “zero-context-cost turns.”
- Link-dense notes (Reddit, GitHub, blogs) as evidence trail, not essay voice in the raw source.
6. Writing implications for the Final
- Mode: Authority article (Index). Comparative landscape, concrete product names.
- Open from CLI parity vs chat bloat, not from “what is a UI” or a stock playful preamble.
- Keep value blocks tight: Hermes Client, Hermes WebUI, Budibase, Conduit, Obsidian, Firecrawl, skills, integrations, Tailscale, then enhancements.
- Unique opening: operator sorting faces for an agent already in the stack.
- No em dashes or en dashes in new prose.
- Cross-link constitution, master index, and Index - User Interfaces UI. Sibling themes (Open WebUI vs Hermes middleware, WebUI and AI agents) stay out unless a light touch helps; this Final owns the surface map.
