Why this exists
Most “systems language” fails in one of two ways.
It dissolves into soft business fog (synergy, alignment, ecosystem) where every word means everything. Or it stays locked inside physics and never transfers to a org chart, a mind under stress, or a market cycle.
What I needed was a third thing.
Sixty calibrated structural primitives. Four clusters. No fluff. Each term is a distinct objective mental lever: something you can point at a problem with, across corporate, psychological, and market landscapes.
This is not a vocabulary flex. It is an instrument panel.
How to use the panel in one pass:
- Architecture - What is the shape? Where are the boundaries and load-bearing nodes?
- Dynamics - What forces move it over time? Where does energy stick, spike, or die?
- Epistemology - How is the observer distorting the map?
- Teleology - What is it optimizing for, locking into, or evolving toward?
Same levers. Unlike domains. That transfer is the product.
Cluster 1: Architecture (Systems and Structure)
Spatial arrangements, boundaries, and foundational anatomy.
Architecture answers: what is the skeleton, and how is it connected?
If this rack is weak, every later diagnosis floats. You will talk about “culture” or “strategy” while missing modularity, permeability, and substrate.

| 11 | Orthogonality | A relationship where components vary completely independently of one another; mutations in one do not tilt the other. |
| 12 | Elasticity | The structural capacity to stretch, deform, or absorb immense load and return perfectly to its original state. |
| 13 | Centrality | The structural prominence of a single node, dictating how much traffic or systemic influence flows directly through it. |
| 14 | Dimensionality | The number of independent variables or coordinates required to accurately define a system’s state space. |
| 15 | Liminality | The structural state of being on a threshold: the ambiguous in-between zone separating two stable systems. |
Field note. Isomorphism is why this whole toolkit works. Topology in a team graph and topology in a product dependency graph are not metaphors if the connectivity pattern is the same. Liminality is the underrated Architecture word: most failure and most opportunity live in thresholds, not in stable rooms.
Cluster 2: Dynamics (Mechanisms and Forces)
Vectors, velocity, feedback loops, and behavioral change over time.
Dynamics answers: what moves, what resists, and what amplifies?
A modular Architecture can still fail under viscosity, saturation, or resonance. Structure is the freeze-frame. Dynamics is the film.

| 12 | Inertia | The physical or behavioral tendency of a system to resist changes to its current state of motion or rest. |
| 13 | Saturation | The point at which a system can no longer absorb or process further inputs without spilling over or failing. |
| 14 | Attenuation | The gradual loss in intensity, volume, or signal strength of a force as it travels through a medium. |
| 15 | Velocity | The rate of change of a system’s position or state in a specific, intentional direction. |
Field note. People overuse entropy and underuse hysteresis, capacitance, viscosity, and attenuation.
- Hysteresis is history still pulling on the present (policy lag, trauma lag, org culture lag).
- Capacitance is how much spike you can absorb before the break.
- Viscosity is execution drag that is not the same as friction in every case: friction burns energy in process; viscosity is internal resistance to flow.
- Attenuation is why good signals die as they climb a hierarchy.
Cluster 3: Epistemology (Cognition, Bias, and Valuation)
Information processing, perception filters, and value attribution.
Epistemology answers: how is the map being corrupted by the mapper?
You can name topology and hysteresis perfectly and still destroy the diagnosis with salience, anchoring, or conflation. This rack is the audit layer.

| 14 | Validation | The empirical or social process of verifying that an input matches reality or meets systemic criteria. |
| 15 | Objectification | Treating highly subjective data, emotions, or abstract concepts as static, physical realities. |
Field note. Four failure modes worth training as reflex:
- Salience over utility - loud is not important.
- Anchoring - first number owns the room.
- Conflation - two variables crushed into one story.
- Objectification - feelings or abstractions treated as furniture.
Metacognition is not a soft add-on. It is how you run this entire lexicon without becoming a prisoner of the first frame that felt clever.
Cluster 4: Teleology (Strategy, Optimization, and Evolution)
Purpose, direction, long-term adaptation, and execution.
Teleology answers: what is this system for, where is it locked, and how does it evolve under stress?
Without this rack, Architecture and Dynamics become clever description. Teleology is where diagnosis becomes intervention language.

| 12 | Antifragility | The rare property of a system to actually grow, improve, and gain strength from volatility and stressors. |
| 13 | Suboptimization | Optimizing a single component of a system at the direct expense of the overall system’s efficiency. |
| 14 | Convergence | The evolutionary tendency of unrelated systems to independently develop identical strategic solutions. |
| 15 | Trajectory | The forward path, angle, and momentum of an entity moving toward its calculated terminal state. |
Field note. Do not collapse these three:

Also separate:
- Hysteresis (Dynamics): the present lags the past.
- Path dependency (Teleology): the past locks the option set for the future.
Related, not identical. One is lag. One is lock-in.
Suboptimization is the quiet killer in teams and products: local excellence that taxes the whole.
Running the full stack (one diagnostic pass)
Take any live problem: a stalled product, a relationship pattern, a market position, a personal work system.
Walk the racks in order. Do not start at Teleology because strategy language feels powerful. Bones first.
1. Architecture scan
- What is the topology? Who or what is central?
- Where is permeability too high or too low?
- Is there real modularity, or is contagion one failure away?
- What is the substrate actually supporting this (tools, culture, body, cash)?
- Are critical paths decoupled, or is everything glued?
2. Dynamics scan
- What is the homeostasis defending (even if the equilibrium is bad)?
- Where is viscosity or inertia pretending to be strategy?
- How much capacitance remains before saturation?
- Is the pain oscillation, turbulence, or slow attenuation of a good signal?
- What would catalysis look like here (agent that accelerates without being consumed)?
3. Epistemology scan
- What is salient but low utility?
- What anchor is warping valuation?
- Which two things am I conflating?
- Am I objectifying a feeling or narrative as hard fact?
- Where do I need metacognition before another intervention?
4. Teleology scan
- What is the attractor state this system keeps returning to?
- Is the current plan path dependent in a way that kills better options?
- Are we chasing robustness when we need antifragility, or claiming antifragility when we are merely fragile with good PR?
- Where is the real leverage point (small node, large effect)?
- Is a local win suboptimization of the whole?
If you can answer those without inventing new jargon, the sixty levers did their job.

Isomorphism is not decoration. It is the design rule of this toolkit.

You do not need sixty simultaneous applications. You need the reflex: when a word fires in one domain, ask where its isomorphic twin sits in the others.
Confusions this lexicon refuses
Keep these distinctions sharp. Soft language collapses them; this rack does not.
- Fragility vs robustness vs antifragility - break / hold / gain.
- Hysteresis vs path dependency - lag from history vs lock-in of future options.
- Elasticity vs robustness vs antifragility - return to original form is not the same as thriving under stress.
- Friction vs viscosity vs inertia - energy burn in process, resistance to flow, resistance to state change. Related family, different jobs.
- Centrality vs leverage point - high traffic node vs small intervention node with outsized effect. Sometimes they coincide; often they do not.
- Salience vs utility - attention is not value.
- Equifinality vs convergence - many paths to one end-state vs unrelated systems inventing similar solutions.
- Suboptimization vs utility optimization - local max that harms the whole vs value relative to cost at the system scale you actually care about.
What this is not
- Not a full systems textbook.
- Not a carousel of soft inspiration words.
- Not a claim that naming a lever is the same as moving it.
- Not a replacement for domain skill. The levers transfer structure; they do not replace expertise inside a domain.

I did not want more synonyms for “complex.”

Use them as a scan, not as a performance. Point them at a real system today. If a word does not change what you can see or do, it was never a lever.
